Our Technology Vision

Evergreen Charter School is committed to use technology in the classroom as an effective and efficient tool for instruction and eagerly prepares its students for a technologically sophisticated world. With computers in each classroom, young students in kindergarten, grades one and two are encouraged to develop a variety of basic computer skills. As students move into the higher grades, they begin to work on word processing and may explore spreadsheet, presentation and publishing programs, as well as integrate technology into a range of projects.

At ECS we are encouraging our students to be digital learners and to enhance good instructional learning practices. We believe that technology brings the tools of empowerment into the hands and minds of our students.  Therefore, we are teaching students to have 21st Century skills. These skills are taught in alignment to the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) and the NY Common Core Standards which include:

  • Personal and social responsibility
  • Planning, critical thinking, reasoning, and creativity
  • Strong communication skills, both for interpersonal and presentation needs
  • Cross-cultural understanding
  • Visualizing and decision making
  • Knowing how and when to use technology and choosing the most appropriate tool for the task

With computer stations in the classroom and a computer lab, students in grades K-6 are encouraged to develop a variety of basic computer skills. Students work on word processing, media presentations, publishing programs, and practice Computer Science as well as integrate technology into a range of projects.

1:1 Chromebook Initiative for Grades 5-7

Enhancing technology to differentiate teaching and learning

The Evergreen Charter School’s 1:1 Chromebook program is designed to cultivate and support learning that reflects contemporary exchanges and interactions.  With access to a Chromebook and the ability to connect via a wireless environment, students and teachers will actively participate in the consumption and production of media, build and contribute towards social networks, and be active participants in developing ideas that can be utilized to solve complex problems.

Each 5th through 7th grade  student and teacher is provided a Chromebook. This 1:1 program provides students and faculty with equal access to their own internet-ready device.  Stakeholders will have access to their Chromebooks 24/7. In creating 1:1 environments, the integration of technology is spontaneous or “in the moment” and mirrors authentic and contemporary applications of technology.


The Computer Lab 

The computer lab is integrated into all areas of the curriculum as an extension of the classroom.  Each class (K-5) attends computer lab for a scheduled 45 minute period every week.  A full-time Technology Specialist (Ms. Hernández) is present for all computer lab classes.  Students are given assignments that are planned to coincide with current classroom studies and are taught keyboarding skills, the use of Office 365, Digital Citizenship, Internet Safety, and Research skills.

ECS purchased web-based software to enhanced technology integration.  These programs are:

  • Samson’s Classroom:  A reading program for students in grades K-2. This program allows parents and teachers to monitor progress and statistics while children play engaging sight words, spelling and reading comprehension games.
  • i-Ready: Cloud-based Adaptive assessment and instruction for math and reading in grades K-6. The i-Ready system is aligned with Common Core standards and includes a Common Core “readiness screener” designed to determine just how much of the new standards students will need to master. The diagnostic component identifies a student’s performance level in a given subject as well as the skills necessary to move forward. The program then assigns students to online instruction that take place in animated video instructions. It also provided detailed report and action plan for teachers and students.
  • Accelerated Reader (AR): This program helps ECS teachers to manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. It also gives the student and teacher immediate feedback based on quiz results. This result is used to help the student set goals and direct ongoing reading practices.
  • Type to Learn: Students at ECS use this program to learn how to type efficiently improving speed and accuracy. This software is cloud-based which allows students to practice their tying skills from any computer at school or at home. 
  • Computer Science For All: ECS began to introduce computer science to all students in grade K-6. Throughout this program, students learn, explore and practice computer programming using and unplugged activities. In addition, Evergreen hosted a school-wide Hour of Code event.
