Math Support

The Evergreen Charter School Mathematics curriculum is aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS). There is a strong focus by teachers on providing engaging lessons, meaningful assessment and data driven instruction. As its core program the school uses modules from the New York State Department of Education called A Story of Units.

A Story of Units provides teachers with the knowledge and tools necessary to implement the instructional shifts (focus, coherence, fluency, deep understanding, application and dual intensity) required by the CCLS. Lessons are structured to incorporate fluency activities along with the development of conceptual understanding, procedural skills and problem solving. Students are encouraged to persevere through challenging problems that require quantitative and creative thinking. A goal is for students to see mathematics as being connected to their environment, to other disciplines and to the mathematics itself.

A Story of Units provides a cohesive curriculum for Grades K to 5 that allow students to:

  1. Develop fluency with facts and procedures.
  2. Focus on fewer math concepts and develop a deeper understanding of the math that is appropriate for their developmental level.
  3. Apply their knowledge to real world problem solving.
